Short Row Heels

Short Row Heels

When going over various types of socks that had different ways of doing heels in crochet class, one that we hadn't covered were socks done using short row heels. So, I set about finding patterns and photos of how this was done.

However, when the instructions that I've been able to find get to the row increase section, they stop after explaining how to do the first row of increases and then simply say to continue. This left me with questions because now the rows look quite different and rather blended together. I had a hard time figuring out where the row edges, or sides, were and whether or not I should Single Crochet (SC) into that slip stitch (sl st) from the previous row to make it the last stitch of the working row. I decided to try it that way before going into what I identified as the "side of the step" (the row edge)

After some experimentation, I figured out what worked for me and gave me an even looking heel. I also found an alternate place (just below the recommended spot) to put that last single crochet before you slip stitch into the unworked stitch that forms the step. The result might have a slight bump but that gets flattened out when you put the sock on or with blocking.

I really like making short row heels because it keeps my work flow going and I don't have to tie off any ends unless I want to change colors.

Alternate place to put last sc is shown in pink. Preferred spot is in green.

  1. I can see how this short row method could be a bit difficult without stitch markers, but it sure looks easier than knitting them. ;)
Those latest socks you made are awesome. If you still had the issue of the bump on that project, I couldn't tell from the pictures. Looks like your method blends in quite well.

  2. These are the kind of socks I need to make for me! I have made stockings (for Christmas) and socks with a rounded heel like most people like, but I have issues with my toes so a sock I can slip on but bring my heel back further into and away from the end is ideal! Great adaptation.
